Frequently Asked Questions

What is your bed maintenance program?
Proscape offers our customers a full service bed maintenance program. This includes a spring and fall clean-up, bed edging, weeding, mulching, pruning, installation of annuals, and Patio Makeovers. We also offer the installation of temporary or permanent irrigation for your beds. We offer these services for customers with new installations and for customers with mature landscaping. Customers can choose monthly, bi-monthly, or an on call basis (with a minimum of 3 weeks notice). We can tailor the program to your individual needs.

What kind of insurance do you have?
Proscape of Rochester, Inc. carries worker's compensation insurance and disability insurance through Guard Insurance Company. Liability insurance is carried through Dryden Mutual Insurance Company. Certificates of Insurance provided upon request.

What type of base do you use when installing pavers?

Proscape uses a combination of crushed dolomitic limestone and fine sand for our base for pavers. Walks, patios and light traffic areas require a minimum of 3" to 4" of compacted base. Driveways or areas that suffer vehicular traffic require a minimum of 6" - 10" of compacted base depending on type of traffic.

What is the proper watering frequency?
Watering frequencies vary with the year, soil composition and the variety of plant being used. As a good general rule of thumb, insert your finger approximately 2" below the soil surface. If it is dry at this level, water. If the soil feels moist (not wet), hold off on watering. For more detailed suggestions, please contact us and request our "Protecting your Landscaping Investment" information sheet. We'd be glad to mail you a copy.

How do you properly remove weeds from between pavers?
The easiest and most earth friendly way to remove your weeds is to burn them out with a small propane torch (Bernzomatic) that can be purchased at local hardware stores. It helps to have a rose bud tip for the torch. We use a large model that works very quickly. If you need help, contact us.

What are the advantages of using concrete pavers over poured or stamped concrete?

Due to our Rochester winters, and the freezing and thawing that occurs, our soil heaves and contracts many times in a year. Poured and stamped concrete walks are forced up and down due to this process and within a relatively short time, will show cracking and chipping; the length of time for this process varies depending on the installing contractor's job quality. Concrete pavers, by nature of their size and their interlocking patterns, can heave and sink together, as a unit, so that there is little to no damage to the integrity of the surface, making pavers a practical and economic long lasting choice for all applications from walks, to patios to driveways.

How and when should I prune my new plantings?
Here are a few main guidelines:
a. Flowering trees and shrubs, as a rule, should be pruned immediately after they are done blooming. Most will set flower buds for the FOLLOWING year within a month or 2. Pruning at the wrong time will remove next years' flowers.
b. Many plants, such as Ornamental Grasses have great winter interest. Enjoy them until early spring before cutting them back.
c. Plants that tend to sucker, i.e. Ornamental pear, cherry, crabapple, etc. should have suckers removed as needed.
d. http://www.hortsource.com/rlPpruning.htm is a great site from various state extension agencies; the site has great in-depth information.
